HPD’s comin to get ya
By Alex Wukman
It’s that time of the year again, no not the time when the Summer Fest line-up starts trickling out or the time when the Inner Loop is invaded by people who wear Ropers and Wranglers. It’s the time when law enforcement starts clearing warrant backlogs. Yes it’s time for another “Great Texas Warrant Round-Up.” This annual event involves almost every law enforcement agency in the Houston region and is designed to pick up people with any outstanding municipal warrants and innocuous things, like driving with expired tags. The City is so serious about this thinly disguised cash grab that HPD has already mailed out over 100,000 notices about overdue citations letting everyone know that they have until February 25 to pay up before 5-0 come knockin on the door.
The cops and the courts are making it really easy to pay off the fines and fees and has helpfully provided links to the online payment options as well as the automated phone system (713-221-0288). Anyone unsure about the status of a warrant can check the municipal court’s website or call the City of Houston’s help line at 3-1-1 or 713-837-0311. It’s also worth noting that even though there are statute of limitations for things like child abuse or sexual assault the Houston Municipal Court assured HPD’s social media team that “there is no statute of limitations on a citation.”
