First of all, Radical Eats is vegan, not vegetarian. Secondly, while Houston restaurants have vegetarian or vegan options, few are strictly vegetarian or vegan. I believe that the Pepper Tree is one other vegan restaurant. Radical Eats is a small local restaurant run by hard working people, and, for all we know, may be having it difficult right now because their street is all torn up to put in the trolley that Houston insists is a revolutionary transit concept (how about Metro Rail making worst of list?).

Just because the writer feels that Radical Eats is not radical enough because the menu is based on Mexican and Tex Mex dishes, doesn’t make it the “worst.” As well, Radical Eats is much different than traditional Mexican. You aren’t going to have to eat the same bean, guacamole and lettuce taco that you get every time at other Mexican restaurants. Further, anyone who is a vegetarian or vegan for ethical, health, environmental or religious reasons (rather than to fit with the in crowd or give Mom fits at Thanksgiving dinner) will know that most traditional Mexican recipes for beans, tortillas and rice are not vegetarian or vegan. Mexican dishes usually have cheese and/or butter, plus beans usually have pork, lard or bacon while the rice is made with chicken broth. Traditional tortilla recipes contain lard. So, Houston does have a lot of great traditional Mexican restaurants which are wonderful for those who attach no label to their dietary preference, but they are not awash with vegetarian and vegan options.

At Radical Eats, vegetarians and vegans alike can safely order anything on the menu. Those who have aren’t either of those can enjoy something different from the usual meat based meals. And, Radical Eats has great aguas, which are a refreshing change from the iced tea and cola and beer every place else. The folks who work there are friendly and answer any questions that you have about the food. Often the owner will wait on you herself. If the menu makes you “want to punch someone,” you are a hair trigger short fuse impulse control deprived person who should be in therapy and anger management class. I’m sure that any astute readers who read the worst of list will be able to make their own decision about Radical Eats and see that there is no justification for the label given. By the way, when is the Free Press going to bring back West Fest? They had Parker on camera saying that she supported closing Westheimer, and I signed a petition. But no West Fest. Perhaps instead the Free Press is more concerned with its over priced, over crowded and insipid Hipster, I mean Summer Fest for the Tattoo crowd.

My son, who eats bean and cheese tacos twice a day, refused to eat “weird” tasting “meaty” beans that had way too much bacon, sausage or mystery meat in them. Lard free, homemade beans are an awesome treat that can be had at Radical Eats!!

I sympathize about the Fiesta. Never in my life had I said “I love that store” until I shopped at our shuttered Fiesta. I didn’t try the new HEB for months, until I found the prices for some of my staples at Kroger unacceptable, so I ventured over to Dunlavy. The first time I was like, “Damn, this place so way too big”. But, I’ve gone back a few more times, and during my most recent visit I found myself liking it.
The bike lanes are just as bad as the roads they’re on.
Glad FPSF has worked out those entrances. Buy tickets well in advance people.

Nice.

Also guess who\’s been eating a lot of pig fat: Anyone who thinks they\’re getting vegan mexican food at a regular place.

P.S. Worst CAPTCHA goes to that shite above. How am I supposed to be able to read that after just waking up?
