A number of cool film festivals and revivals are unreeling in Houston (and Austin) over the next few months. Consider some of these options for your viewing entertainment.

  • Splatterfest – for the grand event Splatterfest (at the Alamo West Oaks) presents all the Evil Dead films in a marathon followed by Bruce Campbell in person on October 1st.
  • The Austin Film Festival (October 20-27) always features unique events as well as seminars with some of the biggest screenwriters in the biz. Premieres include the Duplass Brothers’ Jeff Who Lives At Home.
  • Cinema Arts Film Festival Houston (November 9-13) presents movies geared towards the arts. Expect everything from experimental art films to studio premieres to guest star appearances.
  • Fantastic Fest has the clout of Austin appreciation for genre cinema that translates into one-of-a-kind premieres. Running from September 22-29 the FF will show the regional debut of Lars von Trier’s Melancholia among dozens of fantasy and horror themed films.
  • The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston celebrates neo-realism with Days of Glory: Italian Neo-Realist Classics a series of ten Italian films from master filmmakers like De Sica, Visconti, Rossillini, Pasolini and others. Films unwind starting September 9th through the end of the month. This is a great chance to see archival prints of pivotal films like Shoeshine or Accattone on the big screen.
