I’m a pretty conservative guy, so I wasn’t expecting the “personal responsibility” argument here. That was a pleasant surprise. If you want to know what an actual conservative thinks—instead of a caricatured version of one—here it is: the right and responsibility for people to make their own choices and reap the rewards/consequences is fundamental for society. It’s the reason we like lower taxes and fewer handouts. When decisions are transferred from the people to the government it is usually both unwise and unjust. We generally support a basic social safety net, but it becomes a slippery slope very quickly.
