Guilla Returns with Fresh New Track

When you get plenty of shine, plenty of bigger shows, and plenty of props in Houston’s hip hop game, usually you follow with tons of features and mixtape appearances. Of course, if you’re Houston’s Guilla, you spend the bulk of the year working on more projects that include a follow-up to last year’s “Rap, Trap & Drums.” For those who have been waiting, I can tell you that the lead single, off of the yet-to-be-titled album out next year, was definitely worth the wait. The track has the rapper teamed up with Fat Tony DJ and producer Ill Faded, and together the two create a sound that places Guilla in a much more grown spot than what you may be used to.
For starters, the composition of the track is top notch with a stronger beat and snappier hook from his previous efforts. For those who don’t know, Ill Faded has become known for making tracks that have snap and polish without sounding overproduced. Add to that the fact that Guilla’s mic skills have come a long way, finding him spitting lyrics on a higher level, and his usually quick style is hotter than it was on last year’s EP. The track was recorded at Homeschool Studios, and features backing vocals from Ill Faded, who also mixed the song.
The song titled “Fannie Pack,” found exclusively here, shows growth for the artist without alienating his core fans. The track just jams, with hooks that stick with you and command repeated listens. The flow he employs with color and pop keeps a steady pace that makes me wonder what he has in store for this album due in the second quarter of 2024.
Until that album comes out, feel free to jam this track on the regular, before catching Guilla on Friday December 18th at Walters. The show featuring the rapper alongside sets from Fat Tony, Genesis Blu, and Nikkhoo w/PLXTX should be an all ages barn burner, with doors at 9:00 and tickets between $15.00 and $25.00.
