However, “planning solutions” sought by these groups are important and worth pursuing, particularly if data justifies urban policy recommendations from these participatory processes. This is due to the fact that urban policy is not ultimately decided by planners and these processes can inform policy and transform opinions of our elected officials. Mr. Rojas’ team should go beyond simply extracting nostalgia and perhaps form and guide coalitions of residents through the ensuing political hurdles – particularly in a develop-driven city where context-sensitive urban planning norms take a backseat to land developer’s profit expectations and public works shenanigans.
