What We Do In The Shadows
What we do in the shadows stays in the shadows – until it doesn’t. What Shaun of the Dead was to the zombie genre, What We Do In The Shadows is to the vampire genre.
It might be quicker to say Flight of the Conchords to strike a bell with the enlightened filmgoer. Flight refers to the popular New Zealand comedy team, and since WWDITS features Jemaine Clement along with sometime collaborator Rhys Darby the film’s natural progression of self-aware humor and mocumentary parody just fit into place. The film is directed by Clement and Taika Waititi, both of who also made the cult worshiped Eagle vs. Shark.
The comic conceit is that the vampire roommates have refused to come into the 21st century. These Luddite bloodsuckers are starting to show their age especially the one who’s 8000-years-old. Reluctantly they emerge into the new millennium, which includes going to nightclubs, learning about the internet, and even meeting a similar group of lycanthropic outsiders.
There are constant laughs and gags in What We Do In The Shadows, none of which I will reveal. What We Do In The Shadows opens this weekend at two area theaters: the downtown Sundance Cinemas and the suburban Alamo Draft house Vintage Park.
