WHAT: Texas welcomes a comprehensive new training and certification program that offers a fresh take on Italian wine education when The Texas Wine School in Houston introduces The Italian Wine Professional™ (IWP) program on March 24. The 10-week program from Italian Wine Central, the leading English-language source of up-to-date, accurate and easily navigable Italian wine information, is geared toward those who work in retail, restaurant, import, and distribution roles, but is also ideal for wine writers, educators and avid connoisseurs who wish to expand their knowledge of Italian wine. Organized by wine style, the program, which includes a rich online learning component, encompasses 9 three-hour classes and tastings followed by an exam. Students who pass the exam and a class project are designated an Italian Wine Professional and granted the ability to use the postnominal, IWP. The program costs $995 and is taught by instructors James King, DWS, IWP; Giorgio Caflisch, IWP; and Nick Helliwell, IWP. Topics covered include:
- Italy’s major grape varieties and their main growing regions
- Italy’s most important denominations that are widely available in the U.S.
- Strategies for presenting and selling Italian wines to restaurant and retail establishments
- Latest ideas on Italian wine & food pairing
- Italian wine labeling conventions and how they fit into EU law
- Approaches for creating compelling wine lists that showcase Italian wine
