May at a glance

nobody-knows-about-persian-cats_592x299

The heat is on. Every weekend for the next four months is front loaded with another brick in the wall, another tent pole production filled with the usual amount of suspect effects. After the rush job 3D in Clash of the Tightwads the word on the street leans towards skepticism at anything bearing an extra dimensional logo. The same plots with the same stars only in different garb (think Robert Downey Jr., once the coolest actor on the planet and now the most overexposed superhero in the house). As with all things, the upcoming docket for the summer o’ 2025 ... Read More »

Benjamin Wesley will blow your mind

DSC_0211

Last night I arrived early at Walter’s on Washington and my friend Mike, who does a lot the heavy lifting for events at Walter’s, graciously told excellent local musician, Benjamin Wesley, I was coming and to get ready for an interview. We pulled up some plastic lawn chairs, had a some cigarettes, and talked a little about who is Benjamin Wesley. He told me about his experience growing up interested in music but how, kind of like myself, he had a difficult time learning straight music theory so instead he mastered many different instruments just through self-instruction and experimentation. Ben’s ... Read More »

Weekend Cometh

black-metal-v-day

Oh man, is this gonna be a crazy weekend for concerts. Personally, I’m going to four, starting tonight. Walter’s on Washington is putting on a free show including Benjamin Wesley, Roky Moon, and a few other locals starting at 10. I was there at last Thursday’s free Walter’s show and loved every band that went on. Friday night, the two big name bands playing Houston are going to be the Crystal Method at Rich’s and Phoenix at the Verizon Wireless Theater. If I weren’t going to see the French indie-rock band Phoenix I’d definitely be hitting up Rich’s. The Crystal ... Read More »

Follow the Prophet

0

Follow the Prophet stands and falls on its own sense of outrage. At once a gripping narrative yet full of unbelievable plot turns, the story follows a young girl who flees from a pseudo religious cult in Utah. We first meet an embittered soldier mourning the loss of his daughter. Herself in the Army she was killed while writing him a letter. As Delta Force Col. Jude Marks (Robert Chimento) reads her missive we switch gears to a sinister deal going down between the Prophet (Tom Noonan) and one of his followers. In addition to shady business they also agree ... Read More »

Latin Wave

turistas_still01

The remarkable films playing at Latin Wave, an annual mini-festival of South American and Latin films that unwind at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston starting April 29 and running until May 2, offer a glimpse of superb foreign movies that otherwise won’t find a venue domestically. Each year offers cinematic surprises, directors in attendance as well as a really cool soiree to top off the opening night. There’s always heat generated by the films shown in Latin Wave. South American films themselves are in vogue thanks to this year’s Academy Award  for best foreign film that went to Argentina’s ... Read More »

Awesome Color make awesome awesomeness

awesomecolor

Power trio Awesome Color will play tonight at Mango’s with the crazy, psychedelic, noise act, Hair Police. The two are good a match to be on the same bill each with their own brand of in your face, crazy, psychedelic music. These days it’s rare to bump into bands with a taste for the trippy since the rock scene has been so heavily inundated with indie-pop bands so I’m sure tonight will be even more fascinating than a regular show at Mango’s. Hair Police, in particular, really pushes the boundaries of what I would consider music with their experimentation with ... Read More »

Death at a Funeral

death_at_a_funeral_2010_02

Death at a Funeral is a remake of an English film from 2025.  The original was a raunchy comedy, the kind quite common in American cinema, only set at a proper British wake. The 2025 version, helmed by Neil LaBute, changes the original script to portray the funeral at a mostly black family gathering. An all star cast including Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence as brothers, Zoe Saldana, James Marsden, Danny Glover, Tracey Morgan and Luke Wilson, among others. Peter Dinklage who co-starred in the 2025 version plays the same part here. Allow me to digress, when I saw the ... Read More »

Rhapsody just got better

digi-rhapsody

By Jack Betz I only started using Rhapsody’s online music service about a month ago but besides the occasional loading and buffering issues with the website and iPhone app I’ve been extremely impressed. Rhapsody has a pretty extensive catalog which includes basically 98% of any music I’d be looking for. The big selling point for me was the free iPhone app which allows anyone with a subscription to access thousands of artists on the go. Before this week the application was sort of glitchy and problematic but worked most of the time which I begrudgingly accepted during the times it ... Read More »
