Spain brings up a lot of different images for a lot of different people. For many young travelers it’s a man carrying a cooler of cheap brew down the street yelling “cervesabeer!”, but the MFAH and its partners are going beyond that. The lasting images of 15th to 18th century Spain are showcased in the MFAH exhibition, Portrait of Spain: Masterpieces from the Prado. The MFAH is kicking off the exhibition this Sunday, December 16th, with a street fair celebrating all things Spanish. From 1 – 4 p.m., Sunday December 16th the Beck Building Main Street entrance will be fully ... Read More »

Romance of the Photograph
You are 23 years old. You are sitting on an airplane, anxiously waiting to be jet-streamed away from the godforsaken place you call home. You’ve spent your whole life here, only wanting to spend it there. Wherever there is, doesn’t matter. But there isn’t here. You peer out the window, impatiently massage the stained upholstery of your armchair. A middle-aged flight attendant wobbles past you and stumbles into a passenger. You think she’s drunk. She’s probably drunk. You nearly regret what you’re about to do. Will you end up like her in 20 years? Lonely, drunk, working a job below your “credentials.” Stacking empty bottles in ... Read More »

War/Photography
We all know war is hell, war is heck, war is immoral and frankly war is stupid. You don’t have to stand on a soapbox to enjoy or comprehend the current exhibit that occupies over 25,000 square feet on the upper floor of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Law Building. These horrific images speak for themselves. War/Photography: Images of Armed Conflict and its Aftermath opens, perhaps appropriately, on Veteran’s Day November 11. On opening day admission to the exhibit (and museum) is free. The exhibit runs until February 3, 2025. The exhibit covers 165 years of war as seen ... Read More »

SuperEverything*
By Michael Pennywark Photo courtesy of The Light Surgeons Every four years, it seems, instead of peacefully being allowed to get over our collective Halloween hangover, someone decides to throw an election. OK, sure, we all know it’s coming and have plenty of time to prepare, but even a two-week drinking binge can’t drown out the barrage of promises, patriotism, and propaganda (trust me I’ve tried). Chances are even your favorite social media sites have been saturated with the suddenly opinionated blathering of your soon to be unfriended friends, not unlike how my liver was after shooting tequila every time ... City Council Mayhem: El desmadre de la política local
By: John Pluecker Towards the end of City Council Meeting: Performed Participatory Democracy last night at Palm Center, a young boy behind me whined, “This is so weird.” I tend to agree. The emotional climax of the show was one of the most bizarre moments I’ve experienced in a while: a political consultant reading a surrealist think-piece on local politics on behalf of a local council member, interspersed with praise songs from the choir of the evangelical Iglesia de Ríos de Aceite, set in the courtroom of local African-American political powerhouse, Judge Zinetta Burney. All the while the directors of ... Read More »
