Houston Music Roundup

Tiny Empires @ Crowbar 10.29.12-10

Photo by Nicole Kibert By: Ramon Medina FPH asked folks in the music community for their highlights or thoughts on 2025.  Here’s what they told us: B.E. Godfrey (listenlisten) Houston in 2025 was paused, anxiously awaiting its impending doom. Like a nervous child awaiting the inevitable punishment from misdeeds, frantically still, imagining every possible scenario. In such a close proximity to the center of Mayan rule, our fate is sensed in the bones of every emotionally-tuned Houstonian. Deeply aware that we’ll surely receive the first wave of apocalyptic destruction. Bob Weber (Anarchitex) There is a migration of bent genius into ... Read More »

twitter-bird-santa-350

As the year rapidly approaches its conclusion (which some believe might actually be the last we’ll have on earth), many of you are probably worrying that you haven’t been charitable enough with your lives. I’m one of you, but fear not, for we bring good news. This holiday season, you can be philanthropic AND party at the same time. Houston’s Black Sheep Agency is hosting its 3rd annual Tweet Drive party on December 12th at 7 p.m., an event that will benefit the children and families of the  Houston Area Women’s Center. Getting into the party is easy: Bring in ... Read More »

Sports Desk: The Houston Dynamo

The Houston Dynamo fell 3-1 to the L.A. Galaxy yesterday in the Major League Soccer Championship final at the Home Depot stadium in Carson City, California.  Before the match even started, it had been built  up as a grand swan song for star player David Beckham who announced he was not coming back to the league next year after playing for five years. There was also much talk of American star Landon Donovan not coming back and looking at other options – which was also a major talking point pre-game.  Yet, there was little to no talk of Houston’s success story ... HPD Cops Shoot and Kill Family Dog on Owners’ Property

DSC02588

By: Erin Dyer Houston homeowners Aisling and Wes Jones’ beloved pet was suddenly shot dead at their home last month. Boss was an eight-year-old, 54-pound Boxer dog that the couple had had in their family since Boss was just six weeks old. Like many others who raise and love their pets, Boss was like “their very own child” and is deeply missed. Free Press Houston spoke with Aisling about the details of the events that lead up to Boss’s untimely demise – one that she and her family consider to be a horrific tragedy. According to Aisling, on the day ... Read More »

Sports Brief: Soccer: Houston Dynamo Earn Spot in MLS Cup December 1

GEDC0598

By: Rad Rich The Dynamo advance to the the final leg of Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference, following a second leg playoff match in Washington against DC United. After winning 3-1 at home in the first leg, in Houston the Dynamo only had to at least draw or hold United to one goal in the second leg. DC United were suffering from injuries but were confident that being at home would be in their advantage. The first half of the game, DC United came out strong, keeping Houston at bay with some strong attacks. But it was the goal by Oscar Boniek ... Read More »

Texans Thankful for 10-1 Despite Controversy

tempAP63076067654--nfl_mezz_1280_1024

By Maxwell Morgan After emerging from my turkey induced coma, I cannot believe the Texans pulled off a miraculous consecutive overtime victory Thursday. This game was one that had me worried. I figured to see gassed players, and feared of any devastating injuries. Not to mention, the game just so happened to be on my favorite holiday. Just by the skin of their teeth, the Texans made this Thanksgiving a memorable one for their fans by winning a thriller of game, riddled with controversy, 34-31 in OT to move to 10-1 on the season. I don’t like to think of ... Read More »

Texans Survive OT Thriller, 9-1

IMG_0238

By Maxwell Morgan Sunday, the Texans hosted the division rival Jacksonville Jaguars in what would turn into an overtime thriller capped by a game winning touchdown reception for Andre Johnson. The Jags (aka Glitter Kitties) are one of the worst teams in the NFL. The Texans are one of the best. Everyone, including myself, had the glitter kitties written off. This game was going to be a blowout, right? Wrong! The Jags came to play and had the Texans up against the ropes much of the second half. Still, The Texans showed tremendous grit battling back to erase a 14 ... Read More »

Damn the Man at Cactus Music

BooTown's Damn the Man Flyer

If you haven’t caught it yet, this weekend will be your last chance to catch local theater company BooTown’s live rendition of the 90’s cult-classic movie Empire Records as Damn the Man. The show, which, for those of you who aren’t familiar with the original movie, is about a “coming-to-age-in-a-record-store tale” about a group of unique misfits who are united by a cause. The performance of Damn the Man will be at Houston’s first independent record store, Cactus Music, which is obviously fitting (and so “meta”), and should make for a unique performance. I can just imagine the theater company ... Read More »
