I think it would be cool if you included games, more space, and accurate schedules
Please don't include a fucking scion marketing booth, i swear i will never go to another block party if scion people show up. I would rather pay for wristbands than see them there.
how many wrist bands will you pay for up front? how on earth could we charge for an event like this? sorry, we wil prob have to hurt your notions of cool to keep it free...
17. I really don't know how you could charge for this, and I'm not trying to slam what you do, it is really impressive to me that you can put something like this together, I've got no solid ideas on how to do that. But I don't think monetarily free is as important as keeping it free from corporate interests
Honestly, it has nothing to do with cool, no one thinks i'm cool for having anti-corporate attitudes, quite the opposite in fact. Being cool in america is all about what brands you endorse anyway. It has to do with my desire to have one goddamn thing out there that doesn't treat me like a marketing statistic. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but toyota makes no positive contribution to culture in this city, marketing setups aside. I just wish toyota and any other mega-corporation wouldn't be given a spot in local culture, especially something with the history this has. Local businesses should be supporting this, and if they won't then shame on them
using Scion's money makes me feel dirty. That said, let's be as utilitarian as possible. No sponsors= no Block Party. Now we do have SOME scruples..we don't ever take money from Camel or any opther cigs, despite having been offered tens of thousands of bux, we don't take money never, ever from Sexually Oriented Businesses unlike HoustonPress which derives a lion's share of all it's revenue from, we trun down dollars from everything from GoArmy.com to lawyers who do shady business. We will not however apply a moralistic litmus test to every single advertiser or sponsor. We have our red lines, but Scion is not one of them. I really appreciate your feedback but either way, we are screwed. By even doing something like this, we open ourselves up to criticism from every angle: Not 'professional' enough or too 'corporate' to not enough art to not enough music, blah,blah,blah...To me, the ultimate test of integrity is always the substance as in: Does a particular advertiser, sponsor try and dictate content? We have never, ever let up one inch on our content despite having been kicked out of dozens of distribution locations and having lost tons thousands of advertising dollar. Anything besides that is just 'peripheral'...
Thanks a lot for the response, that definitely helps put it in context. And truth be told i was a bit out of line in the first place. Without a doubt, a lot of great cultural events have been ruined by growing corporate presence, but that doesn't mean that free press will let that happen. It seems like an "alright you can come into my house, but take off your damn shoes" approach, and you've (deservedly) earned a lot of trust to not let this creepy guest wander around the house too much.
And I'll definitely give you credit, having an ISO table or a 9/11 truth table in the same area is a good way to balance it out, and i think as long as all viewpoints are given that is pragmatically speaking the best we can hope for in this unfortunate climate. Certainly, my claims of not attending are fake, I will be at the next block party, and the next one, etc, and the scion people will get more evil leers from me. Its really cool of you to give this insight into how it works
Yeah man- It def sucks but if we can grow it to where we don't need corp$$ and can do it independently, that would be the coolest. Sooon, soon...
Thanks for the support anyway, we hope this next one is gonne be great, gonna try and push the artistic envelope on the visual end and try and reduce the 'carbon footprint' of the eevnt as well as we can..
I just want to play it and it would be a dream to one day close down westheimer that day again...I miss not getting hit by cars.
sweeeet. my daughter hasn't missed a single block party yet in her life!
Many people think that yoga is just stretching. But while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body and mind and encourages both strength and flexibility. Yoga is done through the performance of poses or postures- each of which has specific physical and mental benefits. Yoga never gets boring. The poses can be done quickly in session, creating heat in the body through movement or more slowly to increase the stamina and perfect the alignment of the pose. The poses are a constant, but the approach to them varies depending on the tradition on which the yogi practitioner or teacher has trained. A practitioner of yoga is called yogi….more>/yoga.html
