Houston’s indie rock scene has definitely been on the rise in the past two or three years, with a slew of new releases coming out as quickly as on the national scale. There are plenty of new acts worth checking out around town, though one you might not know much about is Houston’s Greg Cote & The Real Life Friends. While the group has been performing more and more live shows lately, last year they dropped a pretty solid release with H*T*X. That release showed Cote and The Friends strength as a unit, paving the way for another release coming this year. That release is an ultra limited pressing of a split seven inch with Better Now. The song “Convincing Myself,” found exclusively here, just proves how solid of a song writer Cote is, and why they’re an act you need to hear sooner than later.
The song hits hard with Cote’s signature vocals opening things up alongside his acoustic strumming. There’s a small hint of intensity while the two play together, forcing the listener to focus on them both before the bridge comes in and lights the recording up like a house on fire. The drums pop and snap like you’d want before the track stops and returns with a ferocious sound filled with a hook that you can’t walk away from, proving Cote’s strengths as a songwriter and performer. While the song is just a hair under the two and a half minute mark, it’s definitely one you should get your hands on.
You can pre-order the limited CD or 7” vinyls in either red splatter or gold colorways from Close Quarters Coalition here before they ship in late June or early July. Greg Cote & The Real Life Friends will be performing at Rudyard’s as part of the album release party for Football, etc. this Saturday June 10. The show will also feature a set from Ruiners alongside their cassette release, and a set from Austin’s Yorick. The 21 & up show has doors at 8 pm and an $8 cover.
