Houston Palestine Film Festival
The Houston edition of the Palestine Film Festival unwinds this weekend.
Films that bracket the festival include the documentaries Gaza Surf Club and Fire at Sea. The latter doc won the top award at last years Berlin Film Festival. Set on an island south of Italy that acts as a way station for African and Middle Eastern refugees, Fire at Sea looks at the lives of the residents who live on the remote locale as well as the workers who respond to and in some cases rescue the ocean bound immigrants.
Gaza Surf Club shows that surfing enthusiasts need only a love of the sport and a surfboard no matter where they are located.
Other films screening are Tawfiq’s Reef, Radiance of Resistance, Return to Seifa Village, Gaza a Gaping Wound, and We Can No Go There Now, My Dear. All of the movies are documentaries, some deal with turmoil and they all deal with hope.
The movies will be shown at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston on Friday night and at the Rice Media Center on Saturday and Sunday.
The Houston Palestine Film Festival unreels from Friday, May 5 through Sunday, May 7. The full schedule is available here.
