Tibetan Monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery
The Mystical Arts of Tibet at Asia Society Texas Center
Starting on Thursday, Tibetan Buddhist monks from Drepung Loesling Monastery will construct a mandala sand painting and perform special ceremonies at the Asia Society Texas Center (1370 Southmore). The ritual involves painstakingly laying grains of sand to create a colorful mandala painting to purify and heal the environment and its inhabitants. The opening ceremony at noon on Thursday will feature a ritual of chanting, music and mantra recitation, and the monks will craft the work through Sunday with hours between noon and 6 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The closing ceremony takes place at 3 pm on Sunday when the monks will dismantle the mandala, sweeping up the sand to represent the impermanence of life.

Gallery Talk — Paint the Revolution: Mexican Modernism, 1910–1950 at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
From 2 to 2:45 pm, join The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (1001 Bissonnet) for a docent-led tour of Paint the Revolution: Mexican Modernism, 1910–1950. The exhibition charts the development of modern art in Mexico and the social, political, and cultural forces that shaped it over the course of nearly half a century. Featuring more than 175 works — including prints, photographs, books, newspapers, easel paintings, large-scale portable murals, and mural fragments — this free tour gives in-depth insights into the sprawling exhibition, which is on view through October 1.
Summer Studios Artist Talks at Project Row Houses
From 6 to 8 pm, Project Row Houses (2521 Holman) will host a series of presentations from the institution’s 2024 Summer Studios residents. The resident artists, who hail from local colleges and universities, have been occupying the Art Houses on Holman as studio spaces and will share their experiences about learning the tenets of Project Row Houses’ approach to art, community engagement and direct action.

Opening Reception — B Anele, Lindsea Varisco and Ellen Phillips: Along Orange Marmalade at Private Eye
From 7:30 to 11 pm, Private Eye (1540 Telephone) will host their grand opening and reception for Along Orange Marmalade, an exhibition featuring works by B Anele, Lindsea Varisco and Ellen Phillips. Each of the young Texas-based artists works on a multi-medium scale and each presents works based in sculpture, painting, technology and performance.

Workshop — Paracosm 101: World Building with JooYoung Choi at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston
On Saturday, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (5216 Montrose) is hosting two workshops with JooYoung Choi, one of the artists featured in the museum’s exhibition A Better Yesterday. The hands-on workshop invites patrons to explore making creatures, building a world for your character, and creating a narrative. There will be workshops from 11 am to 1 pm and from 2 to 4 pm with $20 admission.

Summer Studios 2024 Opening + Community Market at Project Row Houses
From 4 to 7 pm, join Project Row Houses for the opening of the 2024 Summer Studios featuring seven resident artists that have spent six weeks in the institution’s program. Under the mentorship of fellows Carrie Schneider and Carol Zou, the residents create and exhibit work that responds to, engages with or reflects the Third Ward community. In addition to the opening, the showcase the Third Ward Community Market, bringing in an array of artists and small businesses to sell their wares from noon to 5 pm.
