If you’ve ever had the opportunity to see a show at Walters, you understand just how important that venue has been to the credibility of our local scene. Walters has put on so many killer shows over the years, and even when they lost their notorious Washington location, they managed to step into an even bigger space and make it work.
Walters has always been good to those of us in heavier bands. Whether it be a punk band, a hardcore band, a metal band, or whatever, Walters doors were always open. One of the first real shows I ever played was at Walter’s on Washington. I’ve enjoyed many a successful night of performing at Walters since then, and we owe it all to Pam Robinson.
Pam Robinson is the owner of Walters. She is the smiling face that greets you and your sweaty band when you roll into Walters for load-in. She is the one waiting patiently by the ticket booth near the front door so that she can stamp your hand and look into your eyes and let you know that you made it. She is warm and respectful. Heck, even my parents like her (when they showed up to one of my gigs). She cares deeply for us rock and roll misfits. She’s been doing this for 12 years, and if that doesn’t give you a crystal clear indication of her level of dedication, I don’t know what could. She gave us a place to play when no one else ever would. She has supported the Houston music scene through and through.
Recently, we learned that she was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, and that she is currently undergoing absurdly expensive chemotherapy. If the cancer wasn’t bad enough as it is, the hospital bills are even worse. This isn’t something that will just go away, either, and it will be a long and arduous battle for her. Now it is time for us to support her.
On Friday, September 6 until Sunday, September 8, Walters will be hosting a very special show, with an enormous lineup, the likes of which we haven’t seen in quite some time. Some of the bands performing will be Wild Moccasins, FeatherFace, The Tontons, The Suffers, Bury the Crown, Knights of the Fire Kingdom, Black Congress, Pbearadactyl, The Last Starfighter, and Safehaven.
There will be a silent auction with sports tickets, concert tickets, local art work, restaurant outings, and much more. Tell everyone you know about this benefit, and be there to support one of the most supportive Houstonians. For more information on how you can help, email info@waltersdowntown.com.
