With the digital rise of music making it easier than ever to put your music out there to the masses, it’s important to remember that when you create music, you probably want to own it. Getting copyrights for your music isn’t that difficult, but it does cost money and take time. If you are a musician or producer making music currently, and want to learn more about protecting your work, this is your chance.

Sugar Hill studios will be hosting a coffee talk on Wednesday, August 7th at 7pm. This talk will be led by Erin Rodgers, an entertainment attorney, and producers Dan Workman and Josh Applebee. They’ll be discussing the basics, like the definition of copyright and other related concepts, how to go about protecting and obtaining those rights.

Questions like “what happens if you’re a co-writer” or “what if you want to cover someone else’s song (or use a sample)”, and “what if someone used your song and didn’t ask first” will be addressed. You’ll get to find out what “publishing” really means!

Then Dan Workman and Josh Applebee are going to lead a discussion on their experiences with copyrighting and how this stuff applies to the real world. Workman is a representative for the Grammy’s, so he’s up-to-date on current issues with services like Pandora, Spotify, etc. Josh has worked with countless musicians in a variety of genres

The talk will be held at Sugar Hill Studios, inside of Studio A. It’s free to attend, but they’d sure appreciate it if you’d RSVP in order to better situate everyone and to ensure that there is a place for everyone.

You can RSVP for the event on their Facebook page, which we’ve included here. Also, the page can give you a more detailed map and directions on how to get to Sugar Hill. If you are a musician, this is also an opportunity to meet other like minded, business and professionally oriented folks, so don’t miss out!
