The Art Affair @ Winter Street Studios
Thursday, June 13, 2024 from 6 PM to 11 PM (CDT)
The Houston Art Affair will take place on Thursday, June 13th at Winter Street Studios. The event will provide complimentary wine and cocktails, as well as live music performances.
All proceeds from the Art Affair will benefit Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts Houston (MECA). MECA describes itself as a “community-based nonprofit organization committed to the healthy development of underserved youth and adults through arts and cultural programming, academic excellence, support services and community building.”
MECA was founded 1977 to push for change and continues to host frequent multicultural events today. According to MECA’s website, the nonprofit stemmed from the St. Joseph Fun ‘n Food Fest, the first citywide celebration of diverse cultural groups living in the inner-city Houston. MECA founder and executive director Alice E. Valdez translated the multicultural ideals behind the festival into a program to promote the arts for the Houston families.
MECA encourages a safe environment where students explore their artistic inclinations and learn to express themselves creatively. The nonprofit aims to foster an atmosphere that accepts its students for their efforts and achievements, as well as their mistakes that teach them to move forward.
Through their educational programming, events, workshops and activities, MECA promotes justice, openness, equality, creativity to nurture artistic growth and expression, and creativity to nurture artistic growth and expression. In addition, they work to foster individual respect, caring attitudes, and diversity within community. In pursuit of these visions, the organization has sponsored numerous events, including a Dia De los Muertos Festival, art exhibits and writing workshops.
