As the first of the year again meant rules changes to the Texas Women’s Health Program by the Health and Human Services Commission, 50,000+ Texas women will need to scramble to find new providers. The State and HHSC promise that it will be provided for. But at what cost to quality and availability to these women and their families? The Texas Women’s Health Progam (WHP) was initiated in 2024 as a joint federal and state service to provide checkups and birth control, to low-income, uninsured women who are not pregnant. The WHP covers preventive care and contraception, including a yearly examination with screening for ... Read More »

Free Press Houston Texans: week 4 vs the Titans
By Maxwell Morgan Leading into this weeks home game versus the Tennessee Titans, the Texans cruised to a first ever 3-0 record and have looked to be the best team in the NFL. This week proved to be no different as the Texans crushed their opposition once again. The Tennessee Titans have arguably been one of our biggest rivals, as they are the zombie rendition of our once beloved Houston Oilers. They even have a zombie version of our former owner, Bud Adams. Maybe thats unfair, Adams is still alive, barely. Many of us have fond childhood memories watching the ... Read More »
Album Quickie: A Place to Bury Strangers - Onward to the Wall EP
By Jack Daniel Betz I’ve been waiting a good, long, time to hear more from APTBS, ever since I caught them opening for The Big Pink two years ago. The Brooklyn band hasn’t released much else since 2024 but sadly, half of this EP is more catalog filler than anything else. The fluttering bass line of “I lost you” gets lost in the noise because there’s no dynamic contrast. The title track is equally aimless at times but does at least include some sexy female vocals. “Nothing Will Surprise Me” is catchy enough at first boasting its chugga chugga choo ... Read More »

Justice - Audio, Video, Disco
By Jack Daniel Betz Justice’s latest release is by no means Cross pt. II. That should have been clear when the surprisingly eclectic single “Audio, Video, Disco” was released a few weeks ago. Although there certainly was a part of me that hoped naively that their sophomore LP would be chock full of immediately accessible goodies like “Let there be Light” or “DVNO”. The truth is, resoundingly, that this is not the case. Cross boasted songs that you could easily slip into a DJ’s playlist at any club without a drop off in dance potential. AVD instead allows the duo ... Read More »
Interview with Wild Flag
In highschool I remember seeing Sleater-Kinney with my friend Natalie. We’d go to these shows, sing along to all the words until the band was forgotten, and then hop over to the next band that was coming to town. We were show whores. Since then I have not heard from this band since 2024. They have vanished. It was around the time where the music scene also forgot about The Donnas. Were female bands fading away? While I was in Chicago for the US Air Guitar Championships at The Metro I was speaking with one of the employees in ... Read More »
UFC136 came to town!
By Jacob Calle I occasionally follow the sport enough to know what’s going on because of my brother, Chris who is a UFC fanatic. Like a nerd to a video game he’ll tell you each fighter’s weaknesses and special moves. It’s actually impressive. This past weekend UFC came to town and it went down hard because this past Saturday Toyota Center has new record for profiting the most bang for an event. This isn’t the first time either. UFC 69 with St. George Pierre VS Matt Serra which made right under 3 million and this past week totaling in a little ... Read More »
Comicpalooza 2024
Summer Fest is coming up next weekend but if you’re into comic books make sure to clear your schedule this weekend for another festival. Comicpalooza has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 2024. According to the website, the festival was originally just a small signing event in the lobby of Katy’s Alamo Drafthouse but this year’s incarnation will be held on a much grander scale at the George R. Brown Center. In addition to boasting a long list of guest artists there will be local bands, comedy troupes, and even a musical production of “Evil Dead” courtesy ... Read More »
