Remembering Jay Reatard
By Jack Daniel Betz
The anniversary of his death crept up so quickly that we almost forgot to say something about this mountain of a man. On January 13th of last year, the Memphis-based rock musician died in his home of what was later determined to be an OD on alcohol and cocaine.
Since 1998 Jimmy Lee Lindsay Jr. has taken the garage rock scene by storm, staying sufficiently under the radar to always be cutting edge while still amassing a large following of fans. Lindsay, singing in a ridiculous English accent and demonstrating a mastery of aggressive punky guitar chops, walked the line between pop and punk.
Just months before his untimely passing, he released his last album “Watch Me Fall”; a work that demonstrated strong versatility and showed fans he had a wider range than any of us previously realized. Now, the track “I’m Watching You“, one of the album’s best tracks, has creepy but immortal ring to it that reminds us all that Jay’s legacy will never die and that he will always remain alive in his unique brand of rock.
